How was the journey across hte Atlantic for the majority of these immigrants

Through the picture, I can see the smiling on the majority of  these immigrant on ship. Though the aboard is so close-packed, even not any sqare area, I can learn the hope and expected from the majority of these immigrant. As we know, it should be a long  journey to across the Atlantic, maybe there is no enough food or drink on aboard, but I can not see any fear or jitters on their faces, that most of them were looking foward their new career and new life in the United State. Even through it looked good on the majority of these immigrant, there still a lots of problems on th sjip.
